TIP #3: Valve Springs--When to change them & how to do it!

In a GX120, valve springs should be changed every 3-4 race days.  In a GX160, there are two types of valves that can be used.  GX120 springs should be changed every 3-4 race days.  GX160 (heavy valve springs) should be changed every 8-10 race days.

With the engine at the TCD, you have to move the rockers off to the side (just push down on the valve side and twist it off the push rod), put the crank at the bottom dead center, then pressurize the cylinder with about 20 psi of air pressure.  The air pressure holds the valve in place while you push the retainer down and off the valve stem.  Pop on the new spring, retainer and rockers and you've done it.  You don't have to re-adjust your valves as long as you don't swap the push rods.
